History
In January 22, 1986, the Rodriguez brothers built a kiosk on the corner of Lopez Jaena and Rizal Streets in Ormoc City, Leyte, and sold ngohiong, a deep-fried lumpia that is a favorite among the street food-lovers in Cebu City.
They named their first venture into the food business after the oldest among them, and with the catchiest name, Mayong.
Within a few years, they developed their own recipes for burger and spaghetti that proved to be a hit among the locals and quickly gained a wider following. They, however, had to pull the ngohiong out of the menu because of the scarce supply of ubod, the main ingredient that is sourced from young coconut trees. The brothers folloed their initial success by setting up shop in the neighboring town of Baybay.
In 1992, the business expanded into bakery products. The first bakery branch was across the Ormoc City Bus Terminal along Bonifacio Street, Ormoc City. Buoyed by the favorable outcome of their venture, and by the number of inquiries they were getting from strangers about franchising, they brought their wide range of bread and snack products to the southern region of Leyte and to the western side of Samar.
Mayong’s is now present in 11 cities and towns across the provinces of Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran and Samar.
